north island tour, day two

After watching the Hahei sunrise, we packed up and headed out toward Raglan. Raglan proper features a quaint little town with secluded surf beaches, but we were headed out to an amazing hostel built right in the bush. The day’s optional activity was surfing, but Jess and I elected to have a hike instead. We checked a map and headed down toward a beach, figuring we’d catch up with the rest of our group later in the day far down the beach where they were all headed. We got down to the beach, but it turned out that the beach didn’t actually begin for a kilometer or two. Instead, we were greeted with a couple of kilometers of this:

Looking at a map, this was supposed to be a beach.

Jess slipped her sneakers right off, trying to convince me that the bouldering would be easier barefooted. Yeah right, girl. The bottom of my feet are like tender marshmallows because I don’t really like being barefooted anywhere other than in my house. And only then when the floors are clean. It took us probably an hour to trek across all of the rocks, and then we hiked through a bit of the bush to get to a proper beach.

A few of our buds had rented the surf gear and we caught up to them after a couple of hours of good hard hiking. After our adventure we climbed the hill up to inspiration point to wait for the Raglan sunset.

Sunrise on the east coast of the island and sunset on the west coast, all in the same day.
